BBSSSA Girls AFL and Rugby Seven's Championships

The inaugural BBSSSA Girls Rugby Seven’s and AFL Gala Day was held at EDSAAC North, Bateau Bay on Tuesday 26 November 2019.

The event would not have been possible without the help of our Development Officers and their teams from the Rugby Union and AFL.

Special thanks to Claudia Bell (Women’s Development Officer, NSWRU), Luke Mack (Central Coast Development Officer, NSWRU), Nicole Greentree (Independent Schools and Operations Coordinator, AFL NSW/ACT) and Mitchell Ede ( Central Coast Development Officer, AFLNSW/ACT).

Gratitude is extended to all schools who took the time and care to adequately prepare their teams for the event – many involved in 6 week programs to develop correct tackling technique and basic skills in the lead up to the event.

The conditions were trying with temperatures consistently in the low 30’s, but a steady flow of iceblocks and slushies from caring parents and a north westerly wind brought a little relief around midday.

With looming storm clouds in the distance we just managed to start finals and complete round games when play had to be suspended due to a significant thunderstorm.

Congratulations to St Joseph’s College who narrowly defeated Mount St Benedict College by 1 point in the AFL competition.

Congratulations to St Peters College who narrowly defeated Stella Maris College via for and against points in the Rugby Sevens competition.

I was thrilled with the overall organisation of the event and constantly saw girls working hard, having a great time and displaying excellent sportsmanship throughout the day. This was particular evident with the good nature of the response by Mount St Benedict College and staff after going down in the final due to the cessation of play from the storm activity.

Congratulations to students staff and officials!
