2015 Beach Volleyball Report

Monday, 16 Nov 2015 9:51 AM

After initial concerns about the weather, the 2015 Beach Volleyball day got under way and we were able to get through the day with no rain delays. The carnival was an excellent representation of the values that underpin our diocese sports association. All matches were played in good spirit and were evenly contested between the teams. Great sportsmanship was displayed throughout the day and a high level of respect was shown to all of the umpires.
The girl’s competition saw a lot of matches having to go to the 3rd set and the level of play was continually improving throughout. At the end of the round robin competition the ladder was as follows.
  1. St Joseph’s
  2. Mater Maria
  3. St Peter’s
  4. Mackillop
  5. St Leo’s
  6. Stella Maris
The 1st semi-final saw St Joseph’s against Mackillop with St Joseph’s progressing to the final in 2 sets. In the 2nd semi-final Mater Maria and St Peter’s played out an evenly fought contest over 3 sets with Mater Maria progressing in a tight 3rd set. The final was another evenly contested match that went the distance, with St Joseph’s eventually winning 11-9 in the 3rd set.
The boy’s competition started quite slowly with a lot of players a customizing to the skills of beach volleyball in the initial stages. As the day progressed though the competition and skill level improved greatly with numerous extended points in each of the matches. At the end of the round robin competition the ladder was as follows.
  1. St Edwards
  2. St Paul’s
  3. St Leo’s
  4. St Peter’s
  5. Mackillop and Mater Maria (tied 5th)
The 1st semi-final saw local central coast rivals St Edwards and St Peter’s do battle with St Edwards coming out on top in 2 sets. The 2nd semi-final saw St Paul’s take on St Leo’s and in a reversal of their round robin match, St Leo’s came out on top after a tight 2 sets. The final was an intense competition between two teams that struggled to be separated in their round robin match. Eventually St Edwards carried their strong play and form through to the final and were crowned victors.
A big thank you to Dieter Rokhamper for the organisation of the beach volleyball courts and for supplying the umpires. All umpires did a great job and were very helpful throughout the day. Thank you also to Tina Clancy for her efforts in assisting with the running of the day and to the 5 St Paul’s student helpers who helped to make the day run smoothly.
